Consumer Products, Toy Testing
At CMTL the company operation includes a fully equipped product development laboratory providing a range of analytical
testing supports for companies working with many types of consumer goods protocols.
Our product development testing divisions, staffed with experienced professionals are increasingly challenged to analyze a
diverse range of consumer products. Product development encompasses many areas of everyday life, from composite building
materials to child resistant closures, toys, jewelry, household products and more. In order to minimize exposure of known
harmful chemicals, toxic substances are prohibited or restricted to limited amounts based on known toxicity parameters.
Accredited by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) and by the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) CMTL is helping
to ensure the safety of children’s toys and many other consumer products.
Toys & Children’s Products
CMTL has enhanced our services to include the latest technology for testing toys and children’s products. Today, both
manufacturers and importers are aware of their responsibility of insuring public safety as the Hazardous Products (Toys)
Regulations require that excessively toxic, corrosive or irritant substances and sensitizers are not permitted or are limited
for use in toys and other children’s products. Under the Surface Coating Materials Regulations of the Hazardous Products Act,
surface coating materials must not contain more than the specified limits for total lead, barium, mercury, cadmium and other
heavy metals. These limits effectively eliminate the intentional addition of heavy metals in surface coating materials and
serve to protect children from toxicity associated with exposure. Regulated substances also includes substances such as
Phthalates used to soften plastics and vinyl’s that have proven to be a health risk, and Bisphenol A (BPA) a chemical
component of polycarbonate which is now restricted from infant bottles and other consumer goods.
RoHS Compliance Testing
CMTL performs RoHS testing; the aim of the RoHS directive is to restrict certain
dangerous substances commonly used in electronic and electronic equipment. Any
RoHS compliant component is tested for the presence of Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd),
Mercury (Hg), Hexavalent chromium (Hex-Cr), Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), and
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE). For Cadmium and Hexavalent chromium,
there must be less than 0.01% of the substance by weight at raw homogeneous
materials level. For Lead, PBB, and PBDE, there must be no more than 0.1% of the
material, when calculated by weight at raw homogeneous materials. RoHS regulations
require that components must have 100 ppm or less of mercury and the mercury must
not have been intentionally added to the component. Any business that sells applicable
electronic products, sub-assemblies or components directly to RoHS compliant
countries, or sells to resellers, distributors or integrators that in turn sell products to
compliant countries is impacted if they utilize any of the restricted materials.
